So I’ve been rockin’ the iPhone for a year now and have found that my experience with the utilitarian gadget can be summed up in two words: life-altering. I’m a changed dude. The mod chunk of metal and glass has become a part of me, an extension of my body, a reliable ally. I’ve made my iPhone unique and personal by downloading a slew of the 50,000+ applications that are currently available. I’ve discovered that scattered amongst the ridiculous and pointless apps are some tremendous ones that have been designed to make goin’ green convenient and cool… Here is a list of my fave eco-apps…. click on their name for a link to download for yourself.

GoodGuide is the MVP of the eco-apps. It is bar none one of the coolest tools a savvy metro hipsta can have in their arsenal… Basically, GoodGuide is a database of over 50,000 products that have been tested to Health, Environmental, and Social standards. All these products have scores in each of the three categories on a scale of 1 to 10. A great resource in and of itself, but iPhone users recently got the hookup because the cameras on the phones can be used to scan products on site, instantly giving shoppers a score! This technology has the potential to be a game changer, leveling the playing field by taking biz away from companies that cut corners and giving it to ones that are sustainably managed…. FREE

FindGreen is like Yelp with a green twist. Access eco-friendly businesses quickly and easily with this app. The LBS-enabled service finds everything from yoga centers to bicycle shops to organic restaurants near you. It has a database of 56,000+ green businesses, perfect for exploring a new city or uncovering a hidden eco-gem in your own community. Organize your search by walking, biking or driving distances… I find myself in a new city almost on a monthly basis… FindGreen has been a rockstar, connecting me with tasty organic food and local green businesses with basically no effort whatsoever… $1.99

iRecycle makes it easy to find recycling locations anywhere in the U.S. Track down that spot to drop-off your old cell phone (or water bottle or motor oil or… well, you get the idea), get directions and find out what else they accept. The app features over 110,000 recycling and disposal locations for over 240 materials, making it impossible to say recycling ain’t easy!… FREE

Keeps you safe by highlighting health alerts that may be in place for any type of fish because of elevated levels of mercury or PCBs, and tells you healthy limits for each type of fish… $0.99

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to say that going green is not convenient… tools are being rapidly developed to help us connect to all the rockin’ eco-products and services out there… very exciting times! A couple weeks back GenGreen, a leading green directory, and 3rdWhale Media, a provider of mobile solutions for the sustainably savvy, joined forces to create GenGreen Digital Media. Their site, GenGreen Life, has made itself into the largest eco-directory in the North America, featuring over 55,000 business, non-profit, and government agency listings… yeah wooh!

The merger of Gen Green and 3rdWhale is pretty fly for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, their skillsets compliment each other really well… GenGreen Life is a fantastic website, complete with events and educational nuggets, and a corresponding iPhone app developed by 3rdWhale (FindGreen) allows users to access the extensive directory on the go. Move to a new city and looking for a local food co-op, an eco-salon, or a green home remodeler? This is your one stop shop!

Another cool aspect of the merger was how the process itself transpired… Before connecting, both GenGreen and 3rdWhale had been independently developing their own databases of information… they were each others’ strongest competitors. Earlier this year at the Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS) conference in Boulder, executives from each company crossed paths and quickly realized that they were better friends than foes. Not only was a head on collision avoided, but an idea of ‘radical collaboration’ was introduced… both parties recognized the business opportunities of sharing. GenGreen would have access to 3rdWhale’s growing database, while 3rdWhale had greater opportunity to develop its media applications…. looks like the executives passed kindergarten, eh? Ya know… sharing is good : )

So kind of a cool story where everyone wins… both businesses are jazzed ’cause their service offerings grew, and eco-savvy folks like you and I win ’cause we get the hookup with a dominant website and iPhone app… awwww, can you feel the love?

LEDs have been touted for years as being the greatest thing since sliced bread. They are ridiculously energy efficient, last just about forever, and don’t have the mercury issues that their sidekick Compact Fluorescents have. Their journey up to this point has however been rocky, with high prices and cool light spectrums slowing down their progress to the mainstream stage. Well friends, we’re getting close to that tipping point where LEDs are ready for their time in the limelight in America’s homes!

Leading the charge in this lighting revolution is the soon to be released Philips E27 bulb…. This mod looking piece of energy saving goodness will replace your standard 40W incandescents, saving you 80% on your lighting billz.

Mmmmm… never thought that the words ‘sexy’ and ‘light bulb’ could be used in the same sentence before!

The E27 is already on sale in Europe and will begin to light up the states sometime in July… projected costs will be between $50 – $70 per bulb… still a pretty penny I must admit, but when considering that lighting accounts for 20% of a homes’ electric bill, 80% efficiency sounds pretty nice! According to Philips, payback can happen within a year if the bulbs are in high use areas… here’s more info from their site:

If y’all are too impatient and can’t wait ’til July for your residual savings, another proven LED bulb replacement that is currently available is a series by EarthLED… check out their 7 watt ZetaLux, which will cost you only $2 to run 8 hours a day for an entire year! Short on wattage? The EvoLux pumps out 13 of ‘em, replacing a traditional 100 watt bulb.

As far as light quality and performance go, great improvements have been made to soften the harsh light LEDs naturally give off (you know what I’m talking about… that blue tinted light that makes you feel like you’re at a rave in Ibiza!)…. Each of the bulbs shown here can be purchased as ‘soft white,’ which is virtually identical to incandescent characteristics we’re used to.

Grinding home the cost savings, let’s go ahead and crunch a few numbers… Let’s say you drop $50 clam on an LED bulb (yes, I know that’s $49 more than you’d spend on an incandescent). Electricity costs over 10 years time will be $20 for LED, $175.20 for incandescent! Plus throw in $30 dollars for 30 replacement bulbs during that same period of time, your totals will be $70 vs. $206.20!… Go ahead, be a savvy investor and replace that initial sticker shock with some o’ that old fashioned long term savings!

Any first hand LED stories or insight worth sharing out there? (I got a couple of my own if you’re interested).
