Get Hip Get Green is leading the charge against those rebel plastic foes…. by using them to make permanent reusable bags. For $25 bone you can pick up a set of 5 recycled plastic totes on the Get Hip site…. or snag a lone soldier for $6 at the Greenloop. And hey, we all love options, right? If this black and green combo isn’t your ‘bag’, you may want to consider the Love This Planet in baby blue.

…. some solid efforts are already being made to abolish the use of these vile plastic buggers. The city of San Francisco has banned them altogether. So has Melbourne, Australia… Africa is moving towards this as well. Ikea is now charging a nickel for each bag… Switzerland charges 15 to 20 cents per bag. London is also looking to bag the bags…. Perhaps the greatest success story is Ireland, who started a PlasTax in 2003 ($.15 tax per bag) which reduced consumption by 90% and raised $9.6 million in its first year, which was then put into a ‘green fund’, further benefiting the environment. Fight on, Irish!

Perhaps you’ve been strolling around town and have noticed stylistically enhanced individuals sporting uber-cool aluminum water bottles. Perhaps you’ve thought to yourself, “huh… that’s a keen bottle. Where might I find one?” …well comrade, you can find them here!! What I am talking about are those Swiss-engineered water bottles called Siggs, and they are all the rave right now. Some absolutely RIDICULOUS designs… Check these out: Off the hook, I know! There are 144 customizable bottles and 22 different lid options and of course they’re ECO FRIENDLY! How? Obvious reasons first… They’re made of aluminum and are reusable and recyclable. But much more importanly, when you have one you’ll never want to be seen carrying a plastic bottled water again! Interesting fact: Americans add 30 million disposable water bottles to our landfills everyday!!!… In addition, most ‘disposable’ plastic bottles are made of PET, a petroleum that sometimes mixes in with its liquid and requires immense amounts of fossil fuels to create….. Well, what about Nalgenes, you might ask? A much better option, but scientists are unfortunately beginning to discover that Lexan (the plastic Nalgenes are made of) are not so great for your health…. Siggs’ interior linings are 100% effective against leaching, so no juice or coffee stains. Yeehaw!

Some absolutely RIDICULOUS designs… Check these out:

Off the hook, I know!

Yeehaw!

Back to the subject of bottled water while it’s relavent…. Not many people know that almost 40% of bottled water comes from cities tap water systems! People are paying for the same water TWICE and the energy to transport and bottle it, not to mention the resources used for the bottles which are almost 90% of the time landfilled. And then there’s the money to advertise it! What a viscious life cycle!

I’m getting worked up!… save me some stress and pick up a Sigg. You can buy them at REI, EMS, Patagonia, Whole Foods, LL Bean, or online to get yours just the way you like it….. Here are a couple more design options to get your juices flowin’.
